A Friend (sometimes stylized as friend) or Unit is a playable character in Touhou LostWord. Friends come from most universes known in Touhou LostWord's lore. For a comprehensive guide to all available Friends, see the list of playable characters.

Starter Friends

Upon first launching the game, rewards equivalent to a set of ten Prayers will be offered to the player by Remilia Scarlet. These Prayers always contain 9 randomized Story Cards and a Friend. In total, seven different Friends are available.

After witnessing the results of the free Prayers, a pop-up labeled "Accept Your Fate?" will appear, asking the following: "Will you accept this fate or hope for another?". This allows the player to reroll until they obtain the Friend they wish to obtain.

Improving Friends

Friends can be strengthened through several means to become more durable in battle.

Enhancing stats

Main article: Enhancement

All six of a Friend's stats can be enhanced with different types of incense. A rarer type of incense can also be used to Superior Enhance a Friend. The amount of incense required for each stat varies from one Friend to another, while the stat caps for Superior Enhance are consistent across all Friends but can be increased with Incense Burners.

Upgrading ranks

Each Friend starts at Rank 0, and they may be improved until they reach Rank 5. Depending on the Friend, as well as their current rank, a selection of different Items will be required. These Items include Books, Tiles, Scrolls, and incense. Upgrading a Friend's rank unlocks Passives and Skills.

Limit Breaking

Main article: Limit Break

A Friend's experience bar initially caps at Level 70, and they must undergo a Limit Break to eventually reach Level 100. Upon being obtained, Friends only have access to two usable Spell Cards. Each Limit Break unlocks a new Spell Card, including their Last Word, for a total of five Spell Cards.

Awakening

Friends can be awakened using Tokens, which are obtained by parting ways with Story Cards or Friends. This increases the Friend's rarity, indicated by 1-5 stars, and subsequently strengthens their Spell Cards.

Awakening progression
Amount of stars ★★ ★★★ ★★★★ ★★★★★
Spell Card level Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 Level 5
Required Tokens N/A 10 Tokens 30 Tokens 60 Tokens 100 Tokens

Equipping Story Cards

Story Cards can be equipped to a Friend's Spell Cards to improve results in battle. A "Suggested Cards" option is available in the bottom-right of the Equip screen, which automatically assigns a Story Card to each Spell Card unlocked for a Friend.

Unit quality

Prayer

Prayer Friends are the most common type of Friend. They can be obtained at any time and consist entirely of L1 Friends, which includes the seven starter Friends.

Prayer Friends require Paper Dolls for Limit Breaks.

Festival

Festival Friends (sometimes shortened to FES Friends) are a common type of Friend. This category contains all Friends from the A-Type Multiverse, as well as several Friends from the L1 Universe. Certain L1 Friends who originally belonged to the Festival pool have been downgraded to the Prayer pool after some time. They are only obtained from Prayers available during Festivals, which are time-limited banners.

Festival Friends, just like Prayer Friends, require Paper Dolls for Limit Breaks.

Ultra Festival

Ultra Festival Friends (sometimes shortened to UFES Friends) are a stronger type of Friend. Ultra Festival Friends represent a majority of available Friends originating from alternate universes, barring the A-Type Multiverse.

Ultra Festival Friends require Divine Paper Dolls for Limit Breaks.

Epic

Epic Friends are a type of Friends coming from alternate universes, in a similar fashion as Ultra Festival Friends. However, Epic Friends are rarer and usually more powerful. All known Epic Friends come from the C3 Universe or the F1 Universe. Marisa Kirisame (Cz1) seems to be an exception; however, although she is originally from the Z1 Universe, traveling to the C3 Universe has rendered her an inhabitant of this world.

Epic Friends require Epic Paper Dolls for Limit Breaks.

Relic

Relic Friends are a type of Friends coming exclusively from the L80 Universe, all of which are based on Touhou LostWord's MV Project. The name "Relic" most likely comes from the fact that the L80 Universe is a doomed universe, making these Friends relics of a lost universe.

Relic Friends require Relic Paper Disks for Limit Breaks, which are the only Limit Break material to be something other than a doll.

Genic

Genic Friends are an extremely rare type of Friends. The only known Genic Friends are Renko Usami (LR1) and Maribel Hearn (LM1), who are the only 2-in-1 Units available in the game.

Genic Friends, just like Relic Friends, require Relic Paper Disks for Limit Breaks.

Pure

Pure Friends are another extremely rare type of Friends The only known Pure Friend is Sanae Kochiya (L0g). Pure Friends come from the Lost World, or World of Spirits. Their Japanese name, Shiro, comes from their white outfits and the faded colors in their designs. Their name in the global release seems linked to their fate: Friends from Lost Worlds were forced to become spirits, considered pure in the Shinto religion. Pure designs bear a striking resemblance to Fantasy Rebirth costumes.

Pure Friends, unlike other Friends, require Duplicates for a Limit Break.

Extra

Extra Friends are a type of Friends based on Extra Stages.

Extra Friends use large Paper Dolls.
